A Bermuda home with solar panels among fields, seen from the air

Questions, answered.

The things people ask before they go solar, add a battery, or call us about the system they already have.

Solar

Residential solar

Does solar work in Bermuda?

Yes. Bermuda pays some of the highest electricity costs in the world, and our first Maxeon systems, installed in 2008, are still producing after every hurricane since.

What return does a system make?

A typical AES proposal returns about 17% a year on its price and pays for itself in the 5th year, with the panels' production warranted for 40 years. Your own proposal is built from a year of your bills, so it shows the figures for your roof.

Which panels and inverters do you install?

Maxeon panels, 22.6% efficient, with an Enphase microinverter on every panel. AES is Bermuda's exclusive Maxeon dealer and an Enphase Platinum Installer.

What happens if one panel is shaded?

Only that panel slows. Each panel has its own microinverter, so shade on one never slows the rest, and you see every panel's production in the Enphase App.

Will the panels survive a hurricane?

AES attaches to each rafter at multiple points with Unirac components adjusted for Bermuda roofs, rated for 155 mph. Every system we have built has stood through every hurricane since 2008.

What roofs can you install on?

Slate, SKB, concrete, TPO and metal. We have installed 20,000+ panels across them.

What are the warranties?

40 years on the Maxeon panels, covering materials, labour and a guaranteed level of production. 25 years on the Enphase microinverters. 15 years on the Enphase IQ Battery. 10 years on AES's installation.

Can I see what my system is doing?

Yes. The Enphase App shows what the panels are producing, what the house is using and where the rest is going, live, and every panel's output on the Array view.

Battery

The battery

Which battery do you install?

The Enphase IQ Battery 10C, on every new system and on the solar you already have: 10 kWh usable per unit, 7.08 kW of continuous power, and rated NEMA 3R for rain, humidity, wind and salt.

Will the battery run the whole house in an outage?

It depends on the size you choose and what you run. A 10 kWh battery covers a typical home's essentials through an evening; 20 or 30 kWh covers more, for longer, and the panels recharge it every day. The site visit sizes it to your loads.

Does it switch over by itself?

Yes. When the grid drops the system moves the house onto the battery and the panels automatically, and back again when the grid returns. No switch to throw, no generator to start.

What does it do before a storm?

With Storm Guard on, the battery charges to full when severe weather is forecast, so the house goes into the storm with everything it can hold.

Does it work with my existing panels?

Yes. The IQ Battery 10C is AC-coupled and connects to any grid-tied system, whoever installed it.

Can I add more later?

Yes. Capacity can be added to an Enphase storage system at any time.

How long does a battery installation take?

Typically 1 day on site, once the permit is issued. We handle the planning application and the utility paperwork.

Paying

Request a quote

How do I pay for a system?

Two ways, and flexible payment plans are available. Cash: a 30% deposit on signature, and the balance when the system is commissioned and running normally. Or the monthly payment plan: a 30% deposit, then the balance over up to 5 years at a fixed 7%, with payments beginning only when the system is commissioned. You can pay off the full balance at any time.

What is included in the price?

Design, permitting, supply, installation and all electrical work.

The process

Start with a site visit

What happens after I ask for a quote?

We email you to set a day, look at the roof and read a year of your bills, and come back with a proposal that shows your production, return and price.

Who handles the permits and the utility?

We do: the drawings and the planning application, the inspections, the Certificate of Use and Occupancy and the utility paperwork, including the meter change.

How long does it take?

Design and permitting take 4 to 6 weeks, and the equipment is ordered while planning runs. Installation takes 1 to 2 weeks for a typical home, weather permitting.

When can I use the system?

From commissioning: it is switched on, checked and connected to the Enphase App, and you have full use from that day.

Maintenance

Maintenance

Do my panels have to come off every time the roof is painted?

No. The panels protect the roof underneath them for about 5 to 7 years, so it does not go chalky under the panels in that time. Paint around the panels each time the roof is painted, and have them taken off about every other painting so the roof under them is done too. AES RoofTech does that as one job.

Do you look after systems AES did not install?

Yes. Our maintenance services cover AES systems and the solar you already have.

What should I check after a storm?

From the ground: the panels still flat and in place with no visible cracking, the racking firmly attached, and the equipment area clear of debris. Anything electrical is a job for a technician.

What if the roof under my panels needs work?

AES RoofTech makes it one job: our own solar team takes the panels off and puts them back the day the roof is finished.

Still a question?
